The Rain Heron is a novel about the price of exploiting nature. It begins with a fable - a lucky farmer who receives the blessing of the titular rain heron. But the jealousy of her neighbours soon drives their region to ruin, and the rain heron into hiding.

Eating With My Mouth Open is an investigation into the meanings of food, body and memory, a patchwork of memoir and cultural analysis. When she was three years old, Sam van Zweden remembers being told to love her body. But that love cannot last in a world where body size and gender are so politicised and stigmatised.

People have been suggesting I read Helen Macdonald for a while, and now I’ve read this sublime collection I wonder why it took me so long.
